"Rumours of an exquisite Thai restaurant called The King and I, had passed by my ears before. Yet, I was not prepared for the experience that lay before me. Tucked away in a narrow street by the seafront, the small façade gave little indication of what was inside. I rang a buzzer and was greeted by a smiling woman dressed in a beautiful gold ensemble. From the moment I walked through the door, I was transported to a world of soothing, traditional Thai music, wooden carvings and splashes of red and lime green in the décor. The attention to detail is astounding. The slightly-raised bar at the back of the restaurant is completely made of dark, carved wood and richly-coloured paintings of Thai village scenes adorn the walls. Even the golden cutlery is decorated with tiny, delicate figures. The overall effect is stylish authenticity rather than exaggerated décor. There is also a downstairs, which is just as beautifully decorated, with carved wooden chairs, plush red cushions and subdued lighting. After just one visit, you’ll be hooked." |
